Cindy Sherman was born in New Jersey in 1954 and was the youngest of five children. Her father was and engineer and her mother was an English teacher, both of which had very little interest in the arts. Cindy decided to go to college for art at the State University of New York.
In the 70s she began her work as a photographer. She was a feminist and used her photography to address social roles, portrayals, and stereotypes of women. She uses self portraits to get her point across, however she is never photographed as her true self. She makes herself into different characters in each photo to challenge female and cultural stereotypes. Her work is very influential and is highly successful in terms of photography. http://www.theartstory.org/artist-sherman-cindy.htm These five images most closely relate to my poem Tulips by Sylvia Plath. I think Clyfford Still's image works the best because the res really looks harsh on the white background just like the red tulips in the white hospital room. The painting has great emphasis on the red with the simple, neutral background. The placement of the red marks move my eyes around the entire painting and the painting has a repetition of the same shape of red through out. Overall, this image is successful and relates to my poem. The only change I could make to have the picture relate to my poem more is by removing the small area of brown/blue color.
